Better Information project

In 2009, Advicenow set up a new website dedicated to helping people provide 'better information' on law-related issues. This website offers valuable guidance and resources for both government and the third sector on creating and updating information.
It is recognised that information for the public on law-related issues must be accurate, up-to-date, and in plain English. But it has to be more than that. It has to:

  • successfully meet the needs of its intended audience;
  • get its message across effectively;
  • be attractive, grab attention and hold it;
  • lead to appropriate action;
  • be efficiently disseminated and available when needed;
  • work effectively as a part of wider services and campaigns.

Visit the Better Information website.

A lot of public information has tended to focus on what the law says and doesn’t do enough to provide a route to a solution. Advicenow illustrates how people need to know more - they need to know what they should do, what the process is, who to speak to, what to say, and how and when to access expert help and advice.

The 'Better Information' website has a section on 'why produce better information?' which discusses the issues involved in the creation and successful delivery of better information to the public. It is intended to be of most use to managers and management committees, senior and policy staff, and those designing service delivery.

Read: Better Information Handbook (1.4 MB)

The section on 'how to produce better information' is intended to help with the practicalities of creating and updating information and is aimed primarily at those involved in commissioning, producing, and editing information on law-related issues.

There is also a 21 steps to better information heaven giving 21 ideas to help you to ensure that your information is engaging, easy to use, empowering, as helpful as it can be, and efficiently produced.

The Better Information website aims to encourage debate on the best ways to produce law-related information and the sharing of good practice. Why not share your knowledge ?

'Better Information' handbook

Better Information Handbook In 2009, Advicenow published a 'Better Information' handbook covering all the issues involved in the successful delivery of information on law-related issues to the public. It draws together existing good practice and provides practical advice on techniques and procedures.

You can get a free copy of the handbook while stocks last. Alternatively you can download the Better Information Handbook (1.4 MB). Or contact the Better Information team for the handbook in an alternative format.
