International survey of PLE programmes

The Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) held its 5th worldwide conference in the Philippines in December 2008. The conference programme included PLE initiatives and Plenet asked Richard Grimes, a consultant, to carry out a survey of all the PLE programmes covered at the conference.

The survey, which included a pre-conference questionnaire, found that 19 of the 42 countries represented ran PLE programmes. The survey concluded that the results indicated 'a world-wide commitment to improving levels of legal literacy and the use in many countries of partnerships between legal educators, government, the legal profession, not for profit groups and the wider community.'

Most of the programmes were focused on marginalised communities and on those who might be expected to struggle to access legal services.
